Sexual Harassment

Sexual Harassment

Harassment is unwelcome behavior causing intimidation or discomfort, creating a hostile environment. Sexual Harassment involves unwanted sexual advances or conduct.

Sexually explicit gestures such as leering, sexual hints, invading personal space, unwanted physical contact, hooting, sexist jokes, and displaying suggestive material are forms of sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment can occur in various public places such as streets, clubs, interviews, shops, schools, and workplaces. It is not limited to males harassing females, as females can harass men, men can harass men, and women can harass women without gender bias.

Feeling guilty for being harassed can give the harasser power. Remember, you did not invite harassment through your actions or appearance. It’s normal to feel scared or angry, but don’t blame yourself. Harassment is not your fault. Focus on self-care and reaching out for support.

  1. Call out unexpected behavior directly and specifically, like asking why they touched you inappropriately or telling them to keep their hands to themselves.
  2. Hold the harasser accountable and don’t excuse or ignore their actions. Make their behavior known to others to undermine them.
  3. Be honest and direct, without resorting to threats, insults, or fluff.
  4. Demand that the harassment cease.
  5. Assert that everyone has the right to be free from harassment.
  6. Stay focused on your message and don’t fall for their excuses.
  7. Keep reiterating your stance if needed.
  8. Use strong, confident body language to reinforce your words.
  9. Physically respond to physical harassment as necessary.
  10. End the interaction firmly with a clear statement.
  11. Avoid using abusive language.
